Each day, laptop and children permitting, Iβll share a prompt thatβs been on my mind, and a few of my thoughts.
You are welcome to share your own perspective in the comments, or just journal it out!
What does making sure my own needs are met have to do with the way I feel and show love?
Part of feeling and showing love is putting yourself on the list (as @aboutprogress so perfectly puts it).
I know how easy it is to make yourself the last priority. Other projects have deadlines, or you don’t want to let a loved one down.
But a pattern of neglecting our own needs leads to resentment of service and sacrifice (rather than a greater capacity for gratitude and love).
One thing I like to do as a mom is take a break from the sensory overload of the day. When things get too loud for too long, my irritability skyrockets, and I know it’s time to step away.
- Sometimes, I go for a drive while my husband watches the kids.
- Sometimes, I find the kids something to do and hide out in a locked room π.
- Sometimes, I take them for a walk in the stroller and say, “Mommy’s putting her earphones in for a little bit, I love you!”
I get creative, haha! The point is, I pay attention to what I need, and I come back stronger for it.
How are you showing up for you today? And why does it matter?

Moms tend to think of themselves last. So important for moms, especially ones with little children, to have time to refresh.

On the rare occasion, I go shopping with a girlfriend and buy myself a nice outfit or pair of shoes that aren’t from the sales rack.

I’m not a huge shopper, but it’s so nice to get out of the house with friends once in a while, isn’t it? Good for you!

It is nice but I feel guilty spending money on myself!

Ooh! That’s a good point. It’s hard to feel like it’s a “need” when it’s for ourselves.

Sleep is a big one for me. If I’m not getting enough sleep and staying healthy, I don’t perform well at work, nor do I have the right mental state to write well.
